Joan of Arc was burned to death on a stake in the Place du Vieux-Marche in Rouen, France. It is in the historic capital city of Normandy, and was one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe.
Joan of Arc was executed on May 30, 1431. When she died, the English raked the coals to show that she had not escaped, and then burned her twice more to ensure that her ashes could not be collected. She was a symbol to her people, but the English did not want her to become a martyr. It wasn't until 25 years later that she was cleared of all heresy charges by the Pope.
