Maine became a state on March 15, 1820. The 23rd state admitted to the Union, Maine was preceded in entry by Alabama and followed by Missouri.
Permanent English settlements in what is now Maine were first established in 1623. The first naval action of the Revolutionary War occurred off the coastal town of Machias in 1775. Long governed by Massachusetts, Maine was granted statehood as part of the Missouri Compromise in an effort to balance the number of free and slave states. Portland served as the temporary capital of the Pine Tree State until it was designated to the south-central city of Augusta in 1827.
