When did Montana become a state?

Montana became a state on Nov. 8, 1889. Known as the Treasure State, Montana was the 41st state admitted to the Union, preceded by South Dakota and followed by Washington.

Montana is the fourth-largest state in geographical size, occupying more than 145,000 square miles. The state shares its entire northern boundary with Canada and is bordered by North and South Dakota to the east, Wyoming to the south, and Idaho to the west and south. The capital city is Helena, but the largest city is Billings. Tourist attractions include Glacier National Park, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument and Yellowstone National Park.
