When did the NBA start?

The NBA was founded on June 6, 1946 as the Basketball Association of America. It took its current name three years later after merging with the rival National Basketball League. The inaugural 1946-47 campaign saw the Philadelphia Warriors defeat the Chicago Stags in the first-ever NBA Finals.

Other founding members of the NBA included the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, New York Knickerbockers, Pittsburgh Ironmen, Providence Steamrollers, St. Louis Bombers, Toronto Huskies and Washington Capitals. As of 2014, 30 teams compete in the NBA; the Celtics and Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers have the most NBA titles in history, with 17 and 16, respectively.
