Nelson Mandela grew up in his mother's household in the village of Qunu. Qunu is located about 20 miles south of Mvezo where Mandela was born in 1918.
Mandela's father died when he was 9 years old, which caused his mother to take him to the city of Mqhekezweni where he would be entrusted to his guardian, Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo. This is where he did most of his learning as a child. Mandela had several names growing up. When he was born, he was named Rolihlahla, and at the age of 16 when he ceremonially became a man, he was named Dalibunga. The name Nelson was given to him by his Methodist teacher when he was baptized.
