Nicolas Copernicus was a Polish astronomer who discovered that the Earth and other planets revolve around the sun. This heliocentric system replaced the prevailing theory that the Earth was the center of the universe and the sun revolved around it.
Nicolas Copernicus put forth his theory in the 1500s, setting the foundation for future scientists to develop and expand on his ideas about the Earth's rotation and its relative position in the universe. He first presented his ideas in a handwritten booklet in 1514 and then published the full theory at the age of 70 in a book titled "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium." This translates into English as "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres."
