Rosa Parks became famous in Montgomery, Ala., on Dec. 1, 1955. She refused to give up her seat toward the front of a bus to a white male when segregation was written into law. Parks was arrested on the spot for violating Montgomery City Code.
Rosa Parks was found guilty of violating segregation laws on Dec. 5, 1955. The Supreme Court found bus segregation to be unconstitutional on Nov. 13, 1956. Rosa, her mother and husband, Raymond Parks, eventually decided to leave Montgomery because of the threats and harassment they received stemming from the bus boycott. They eventually moved to Detroit to live with Rosa's brother.
