The advertising phrase "What would you do for a Klondike Bar?" originated in 1982. That year, the ice cream dessert began expanding into the national marketplace.
For decades after the chocolate-covered ice cream was developed by the Isalay family, Klondike Bars were available only in Pennsylvania and Ohio. In 1978, the brand changed ownership and distribution started in Florida. New York and New England soon followed. In 1982, national marketing began with ads showing people doing improbable things to get one of the treats. Unilever bought the Klondike brand in 1993. The question has become an icon, recognized and frequently spoofed in pop culture.
