How did Sonny die on General Hospital?

As of 2015, the character Sonny Corinthos on the daytime soap opera General Hospital is not dead. He has been a featured character on the show since 1993.

Throughout the character's run on the show, he has escaped near death on countless occasions, surviving bullets, fires, bombs, stabbings and overdoses. The character is played by Maurice Bernard. He left the role in 1997, returned to it briefly in mid-1998, and reclaimed it full time at the end of 1998. Over the course of the series, he won a Daytime Emmy award for his role in 2003, and he was nominated another six times.
