The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 7.52 percent in 2014 while the NASDAQ and S&P 500 both rose by over 11 percent, according to an article posted to CNBC's website at 4 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2014. Utilities were the year's best-performing sector, gaining 24.28 percent.
2014 was also a good year for the dollar as the U.S. currency rose against other world currencies, as noted by CNBC. On the downside, Brent crude oil prices fell to a five-year low at $57 per barrel. Of the large, national markets, Russia and Greece fared the worst, loosing 45 percent and 29 percent respectively.
