The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened at 16,572.17 on Jan. 2, 2014, and it closed at 17,823.07 on Dec. 31, 2014. As of 2015, the Dow tracks 30 large corporate stocks, including General Electric, Home Depot, McDonald's Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores.
For comparison, the Dow closed at 13,264.82 on Dec. 31, 2007, just as the United States entered the Great Recession. The average fell throughout the next two years, dipped to 6,626.94 on March 6, 2009, and then began a steady rebound, ending at 10,428.05 on Dec. 31, 2010. The NASDAQ, which tracks a much broader selection of stocks than the Dow, opened at 4,160.03 on Jan. 2, 2014, and closed at 4,736.05 on Dec. 31, 2014.
