New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Washington's Birthday, Good Friday and Memorial Day were all holidays that the New York Stock Exchange observed in 2014, according to the Daily Gains Letter. Other holidays that the NYSE observed that year were Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

While these are the only weekdays when the exchange has normally scheduled closures, it can select a day of mourning upon the death of a U.S. president, reports the Daily Gains Letter. The exchange also sometimes observes moments of silence in commemoration of historic events during which all trading comes to a stop.
