What is the difference between DDR and DDR2?

DDR2 is the second generation of Double Data RAM, this means that DDR2 offers faster transfer rates at twice the bus speed and is more power-friendly compared to its DDR1 counterpart. The two RAMs are not compatible with each other, meaning DDR1 cannot be used in place of DDR2.

Another key difference between the two lies in the connector. DDR2 chips typically use 240 pin dual inline Memory Modules that are physically different from the 184 pin connectors used by DDR1 RAMs. Excess signal noise in DDR1 RAMs is usually eliminated using in-built resistors on the motherboard. DDR2 uses terminating resistors built within each memory chip.
