Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan, whereas Buddhism originated in India and only reached Japan in the eight century. Shinto is a religion with a polytheistic pantheon, whereas Buddhism does not have a main deity, and it mainly focuses on the words and philosophies of the Buddha.

The sacred texts of the Shinto are The Kojiki and the Nihongi, whereas the Buddhist texts include the Mahayana, Pali Tipitika and Vajrayana Canons. Shinto does not have a specific founder, whereas a wealthy Indian prince founded Buddhism in the fifth century BCE. While Buddhism has several religious branches, Shinto does not have any religious sects.
