Some different types of glass are annealed, laminated, coated, mirrored and patterned. There is also toughened glass, which is treated to be resistant to breakage. It is usually heated above an annealing point to toughen it.

Annealed glass is the basic form of glass that often breaks into large shards that are sharp. This type of glass is often used for double-glazed windows, but it frequently begins as the base glass material for other varieties, such as coated and laminated glass products. Laminated glass has multiple layers of glass, with polymeric material bonded between each of the layers. Coated glass has a coating that changes its appearance, such as making it more scratch resistant.
