What is digital media?

Digital media is any audio, video or photo that has been encoded into data files. These files may then be transported and stored using digital storage medium and played back with a variety of software applications.
Digital media files are often compressed to allow greater lengths of audio and video to be more easily stored. The file sizes of most digital media depends on the level of compression used. The greater the compression levels, the more detail that is lost from the original media. In addition to data files, digital media includes DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and audio CDs. A common app used to playback several digital file types is the Windows Media Player.
