The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball, which is the international governing body for the sport of volleyball, including beach volleyball, mandates that a beach volleyball court must be a rectangle measuring 16 meters by 8 meters. This rectangle must be surrounded by a free zone at least 3 meters wide on all sides.

In the United States, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and American Volleyball Coaches Association also use the international standard court dimensions of 16 meters by 8 meters for sand volleyball. They also require that the free zone be 5 to 6 meters on each side. For four- and six-person team volleyball, the court must be 18 meters by 9 meters.
