The Cosmetic Ingredient Review, or CIR, Expert Panel also declared dimethicone safe for use in cosmetics because of its large molecular weight.
The large molecular weight means that the ability to be absorbed is lessened, according to Cosmetics Info. Dimethicone is a silicon polymer derivative used in cosmetics and personal care products. It is mainly used as an antifoaming agent, occlusive skin conditioning agent and skin protectant. Dimethicone is clear, inert, nonflammable and nontoxic.
