The discovery of Saturn dates back to prehistoric times, as it is visible with the naked eye. It is prominent throughout ancient Babylonian, Greek and Roman mythologies. The European astronomer Galileo was the first to discover Saturn's rings in 1610.
Babylonian astronomers may have been the first to record the movements of Saturn in the night sky. The Pioneer 11 probe was the first to pass by Saturn in 1979, with Voyagers 1 and 2 following in 1980 and 1981. In 2004 the Cassini probe entered orbit around Saturn and, as of 2014, continues to send back data regarding the planet.
