Since Saturn is visible to the naked eye, it has been known of for thousands of years. Saturn has names in several ancient cultures; it was called Kronos by the ancient Greeks, Shabbathai by the Hebrews and Navagrahas by Hindu cultures.
While planets look similar to stars, their movements are different, so cultures that tracked celestial objects would have noted Saturn as rare. Saturn's rings are not visible to the naked eye; in 1610, Galileo became the first person known to have seen Saturn's rings, although he did not recognize them as rings. Christian Huygen both determined the structure of Saturn's rings in 1655.
