William Ramsay and Morris Travers discovered the element neon in 1898. These chemists made their discovery of neon by studying liquefied air. In this same year, Ramsay and Travers also discovered krypton.

Neon is a noble gas with an atomic number of 10. Its atomic weight is 20.1797 grams per mole, and its melting point is -415.46 degrees Fahrenheit. Neon's name comes from the Greek word "neos," which signifies new.

Because it is a noble gas, neon is inert and does not form compounds. However, scientists do believe that it may possibly form a compound with fluorine. Neon is found in the Earth's atmosphere. Some uses of neon are for advertising signs, refrigerant and in gas lasers.
