What is DivX?

DivX is a software brand that provides a number of computer video programs, including encoders for popular video formats. Its codecs include support for MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 AVC technology, two common video formats.

Video encoding is typically based on standard encoding technology, but the standards don't explain how encoders should create files. As a result, encoders have different ways of determining how to create files that decoders can read. DivX offers options for a number of video standards. Furthermore, encoders can target different bit rates and resolutions for different uses; users creating video for mobile devices, for example, might favor a low resolution and small file size over a higher resolution. DivX software lets users choose between different encoding profiles to create video files appropriate for the devices they target.
