The cubic decimeter, often written as dm3, is a measurement of volume. A cubic decimeter is exactly the same as 1 liter and is also equal to 10 deciliters.
The volume of 1 cubic decimeter can be contained in a cube-shaped box that is 1 decimeter along each of its edges. A decimeter is a unit of length that equals 10 centimeters or 1/10 of a meter. The volume of 1 cubic decimeter is also equal to the volume of water with a mass of 1 kilogram at a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius. The density of water decreases as the temperature increases to its boiling point, so the volume of 1 kilogram of water varies with temperature.
