What is a DMV eye chart?

At many Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) offices, eye charts are used by employees to check the vision of people applying for or renewing their driver's licenses. This chart ensures that the minimum vision requirements are met and upheld.

If a license is not restricted to corrective lenses and the person renewing the license is wearing glasses, he will be asked to remove the glasses and read letters from the eye chart. If the applicant's vision is below 20/40, he may have his vision further tested.

As of 2014, the minimum vision requirement to have a license without a corrective lenses restriction is 20/40 with both eyes. If one eye is 20/40, the other eye has to be at least 20/70.
