DNA is an organic compound. An organic compound is one that contains carbon bonded to hydrogen; DNA is a complex molecule that contains multiple carbon-hydrogen bonds.
DNA is made of three components: the sugar deoxyribose, nitrogenous bases and phosphate groups. Both deoxyribose and the nitrogenous bases are organic compounds themselves, while the phosphate group is inorganic. Deoxyribose and the phosphate groups form the double-stranded structure of the DNA molecule, and the nitrogenous bases connect the two strands.
The four nitrogenous bases found in DNA are cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymine. Different combinations of these bases form the unique genetic codes of living organisms.
