What is the best dog breed for squirrel hunting?

Outdoor Life magazine considers the Mountain Cur, a type of hound, to be the best breed for squirrel hunting. In 2015, eight Mountain Curs finished in the top 10 in the Squirrel Dog World Championships.

Mountain Curs were a prominent breed among settlers in the Appalachians and Allegheny Mountains. They are medium-sized dogs with straight, slightly bobbed tails. Bred for their ability to cold and hot track, tree and bay small game, RealWorldSurvivor.com calls them “game crazy.” The devoted dogs are eager to please, making them good family pets and guard dogs. United Kennel Club formally recognized the Mountain Cur breed in 1998.
