A dogwood is a small tree or a shrub that can grow to around 30 to 40 feet tall. There are at least 30 to 60 kinds of dogwoods. Several are native to North America.
The most popular type of dogwood is the flowering dogwood. In spring, it bears bracts, or modified leaves, around tiny, greenish flowers. These bracts, which can be pink, white or ivory in color, are often mistaken for petals. In the fall, dogwoods produce red drupes. The dogwood's bark pattern and deep-green leaves that turn brilliant red and maroon in the fall make it popular as an ornamental tree.
