Why do dogwood tree leaves curl?

Curled, wilted or distorted leaves, along with dark or tarlike spots are common symptoms of dogwood anthracnose. Drought and winter injuries weaken trees, and the anthracnose fungus mostly attacks during the cool, wet spring and fall weather, but it can occur during any season.
Anthracnose can be treated by pruning the infected leaves, limbs and branches from the dogwood, taking care not to leave any infected material near the tree. Spray the dogwood with a fungacide, making sure it is completely covered, and repeat seven to 14 days later. Prevent the fungus from returning by using a fertilizer designed for dogwoods once the leaves have opened, and prune in winter to allow proper air circulation.
