What is dollarweed?

Dollarweed is a weed shaped like a silver dollar that grows during warm weather. It can float on top of water or grow on land. Also known as pennywort, the dollarweed resembles a small lily pad.

Dollarweeds prefer moist locations and can take over a lawn if they are not controlled. Controlling dollarweed involves using a herbicide in the late spring, when dollarweeds first appear. Young dollarweeds are easier to kill than mature weeds. The best way to prevent dollarweeds is to correct the moisture level of the soil. Reducing the amount of irrigation to the area and modifying the cutting height of the lawn are also successful prevention methods.
