Do dolphins have hair?

Dolphins are mammals, and all mammals have some type of hair. There is a misconception that the bottlenose dolphin has no hair on its body, but dolphins do have a small area on their noses that produces hair.

When a dolphin is in the womb, five small holes form on the snout. These holes produce whiskers that are noticeable upon the birth of a baby dolphin. As the baby dolphin becomes a stronger swimmer, the pull of the water against the whiskers eventually removes the whiskers at the root.

The whisker pits of a dolphin show even after it matures. The root of the hair will grow back, but the constant swimming prevents the hair from ever breaking the surface.
