During the Truman-MacArthur controversy, Douglas MacArthur was commander of the United Nations forces and was relieved by President Truman after voicing opinions regarding expanding the Korean War to include China. After ignoring warnings from President Truman, General MacArthur was relieved of his command in April 1951.
Prior to the Korean War, General MacArthur became commander of the U.S. military forces in the Pacific theater. Between 1935 and 1941, he served as the United States military adviser to the Philippines under President Roosevelt. Douglas MacArthur began his military career in 1903 after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point with honors.
