Downton Abbey is filmed in various sets and locations in the United Kingdom. The Highclere Castle, located in north Hampshire, is used for external shots of the Abbey itself, as well as many interior shots.
Many real historical locations and castles have been used to film the series. The Crawley family's second house is really Grey's Court in Oxfordshire. The dower house is really Byfleet Manor, located in Surrey. Downton station is the Horsted Keynes railway station in Sussex. Duneagle Castle is really the Inveraray Castle in Argyll, Scotland. Brancaster Castle is filmed at the Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, and the Haxy Park estate is a part of Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire
