Dracaena cinnabari, or a dragon's blood tree, is a tree native to the Socotra archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It is named for its red sap, which is used in dyes, incense and medicine. Its most famous use was as the varnish for the Stradivarius violin.
Dragon's blood trees are slow growing. Their densely spaced leaves grow in rosettes, and the branches of mature trees grow into an umbrella shape. They produce fleshy fruits with up to three seeds that are eaten and dispersed by birds. As of 2014, the dragon's blood tree was listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
