According to the City of Austin, the drinking age in Texas is 21. Before buying alcohol in a store, bar or restaurant, customers are often asked to show photo ID with proof of age.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission states that it is a misdemeanor in Texas for minors to drink or buy alcohol, to be publicly intoxicated or to use false identification to purchase alcohol. If convicted, possible penalties include a fine, community service, suspension of driver's license or an alcohol awareness class. A third offense is punishable by up to six months in jail. Persons selling alcohol to a minor face fines and jail time as well.
