What driveway sealant is better?

Choosing the best driveway sealant for a particular application depends largely on expectations for longevity and protection, and there are several to choose from at different price points. There are three main types of driveway sealants: coal tar, asphalt and acrylic polymer.
Coal tar sealants resist gasoline, oil and water. They also protect driveways from deterioration caused by UV rays. Asphalt sealants protect driveways from the same perils, but do not have as strong of a smell as coal tar, which can be quite noxious. Both types of sealants are quite affordable. Acrylic polymer driveway sealants cost more, but typically last the longest and have low emissions of VOCs.
