Is duct tape waterproof?

While standard duct tape is water resistant, it is not waterproof and should not be submerged in water for any length of time. The cloth-backed tape is manufactured from a variety of materials, including polyester and cotton, that are laminated with polyethylene.

Duct tape provides a strong adhesive that can be used to do many types of repairs. Although the name implies that the tape can be used to repair ducts, the standard type does not hold up well to heat. Instead, specialty HVAC tape should be used for that purpose. Other specialty duct tapes include gaffer's tape and racer's tape.
