MyRecipes.com offers two simple recipes for spiced apples, both cooked on the stove top. The Public Broadcasting Service website has a recipe for baked apples with cinnamon, while Tyler Florence shares his version, which includes raisins, on the Food Network website.
For MyRecipes.com's spiced apples, melt 1/2 a cup of butter or margarine in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Peel, core and slice 8 large Granny Smith apples, and add to the pan along with 1 1/2 cups of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Sauté for 15 to 20 minutes or until the apples are tender.
To make the MyRecipes.com recipe for warm cinnamon apples, peel and slice 4 Mcintosh apples. Toss in a large zip-top plastic bag with 1/2 cup of firmly packed light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, until the apples are coated. In a medium saucepan, cook the apple mixture with two tablespoons of water and 1 tablespoon of butter over a medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes or until the apples are tender. This dish makes a delicious breakfast or side dish, as well as being a complementary addition to a meal of pork.
