The red-tailed hawk, which is the most typical hawk in the U.S., has only a handful of predators, including the red fox, the raccoon and the great-horned owl. Hawks are known as raptors or birds of prey, and are typically the predator instead of the prey.
Hawks hunt for their food from the sky above, and they have excellent eyesight that allows them to hone in on their favorite foods. In fact, the hawk's eyesight is so acute, it can see a juicy mouse from as high up as 100 feet.
Although the hawk will eat nearly everything — from insects to road kill — their main diet is made up of small mammals, including voles, moles, rats, chipmunks, cats, bats, skunks, muskrats and shrews.
