What eats lobsters?

A wide variety of fish, including cod, flounder and wolffish, eat young lobsters. Once lobsters reach maturity, however, they have few predators aside from man. An adult lobster is most vulnerable to predators when it is molting, as its movement is limited and its exterior is soft.

Larval lobsters are opportunistic feeders and consume a myriad of zooplankton and phytoplankton. As the young lobsters mature, their diet expands to include larvae of other animals, fish eggs and small animals. The juvenile and adult forms of the lobster actively seek out prey, including crabs, shellfish, starfish, marine worms and snails. Once a lobster secures its prey, it carries it back to its home.
