What education is needed to become a pastry chef?

Education requirements for pastry chefs differ by employer, with many requiring no formal education. There are training programs, degrees and certifications that can make a prospective pastry chef more attractive to potential employers.

An Associate of Applied Science in Baking and Pastry Arts program provides training in the preparation of chocolate, candy, cake and other pastries. Courses include specialty pastries, design and plating.

Apprentice programs are also offered by some employers. Apprentices receive two to three years of on-the-job training and are required to complete formal courses in food handling, nutrition and safety.

There are also certification programs offered by professional organizations such as the American Culinary Federation and Retail Bakers of America. Students generally complete these programs in addition to a formal education or apprenticeship.
