What was the Elizabethan religious settlement?

The Church of England was established by Queen Elizabeth as part of the Elizabethan religious settlement in 1558. The settlement was intended to create stability for the nation and government, from the tension between Catholicism and Protestantism.
Queen Elizabeth's vision was to create a state religion, so as to separate the nation from foreign influences. The settlement was a way to moderate the relationships with surrounding countries such as the predominantly Catholic France and Spain, as well as the Protestant Dutch. The Church of England also granted England its own independence as it would not have to succeed to the religious pressures of other countries.
