Are elk teeth made of ivory?

Elk teeth are a type of ivory and are widely used in Native American decoration as well as modern jewelry. While elephants are the most valuable and well-known source of ivory, they are only one of several animals that produce the material.

Only two teeth, which are modified tusks in roughly the same location as human canine teeth, in each elk are ivory. Usable amounts of ivory are found in several different species, including the elk, pig, walrus and hippopotamus. The narwhal and sperm whale also produce ivory. Elk were once hunted for ivory alone, but it is not a modern practice because of ivory prohibitions and the very small amount of ivory in each animal.
