Is there an energy assistance program if you have wood heat?

Energy assistance programs are usually administered by the state or county of residence and vary greatly between localities. However, most areas offer some form of assistance to homes that use wood as their primary heat source through their Human Services department, Office of Temporary Assistance or equivalent.
For example, in the state of New York, the HEAP program offers financial aid to legal residents who are receiving some other form of financial assistance, such as SNAP or SSI. Eligible households can get $500 plus applicable add-on costs to assist with payments for wood and wood pellets that are delivered by a vendor.
