The Entered Apprentice degree is an internal ranking within the Brotherhood of Freemasons. It is the first level attained upon initiation. The Entered Apprentice is also referred to as a first-degree mason.
The process by which a candidate earns an Entered Apprentice degree is a series of rites and formalized questions and answers. The Entered Apprentice position is followed by the Fellowcraft, second-degree, and the Master Mason, third-degree. The working tools of an Entered Apprentice are the 24-inch gauge and the common gavel, both symbols of his obligation to the Brotherhood and its tenants. Entered Apprentices are not allowed to hold office within the Freemasons.
