What does an ER doctor do first to determine a concussion or serious head injury?

When faced with a head injury patient, the doctor first checks for physical signs, followed by thinking, capability and mood symptoms, according to Cleveland Clinic. Headaches are the most common concussion symptoms.
Headaches that gradually worsen over time are more serious, as the effect may signify internal bleeding in the skull. A CT scan or MRI may be administered in the event of probable internal bleeding, but these procedures do not show cellular damage caused by a concussion. Overnight hospital observations are used for more serious cases, while cognitive tests examine the patient's ability to concentrate and solve problems, according to Cleveland Clinic.
