The esophagus is located directly below the throat in front of the spine. It runs down down the body and connects with the stomach.
The average esophagus in an adult human is 8 inches long. The tube-shaped organ runs down the body, behind the windpipe and heart, and it is one of the main components involved in eating and drinking. As food is consumed, it passes all the way down through the esophagus and enters the stomach playing a large part in the digestive process. There are many medical conditions that can affect the esophagus including cancer, inflammation and tears.
