What is an example of social stratification?

Social stratification is the organization of social hierarchies, such as the upper, middle, and lower class. It is based on societies as a whole and not on individuals within society.

People that are higher in the hierarchy generally have more access to opportunities, luxuries, and rewards than those in below them. Social inequalities experienced by those lower in the hierarchy experience may last for several generations. Social stratification takes wealth, location, and sometimes heritage into account to determine social status.

It is theorized that social stratification is necessary to create a smooth-running society and that it is essential to provide more abundantly for those such as surgeons and physicians who are able to perform difficult and important tasks, while less demanding jobs can be performed by those without these skills.
