The platypus is the one of the few venomous mammals in the world. The egg laying, semi-aquatic animal is only found in Australia.
The male platypus produces venom only during the breeding season. The venom is produced in the abdomen and is a defense tactic used to keep other animals, including other platypuses, from approaching a female with which the male is mating. The venom is released through spurs that are located along the animal's hind legs. The venom produced by platypuses is similar to that found in snakes and other reptiles. The pain from the venom can leave victims suffering for a long time.
