What are some examples of acronyms?

Examples of acronyms include scuba (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) and radar (radio detection and ranging). An acronym is a pronounceable word formed from the initials of words in a phrase or a series of words.

Other well known acronyms include NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), BASE jumping (building, antenna, span, Earth), and GIF (graphic interface format). The Swedish home furnishing store, IKEA, is an acronym combining its founder's name (Ingvar Kamprad) with the name of his farm (Elmtaryd) and village (Agunnaryd).

Because they are pronounceable words, acronyms are distinct from abbreviations. The abbreviations UFO (unidentified flying object) and NFL (National Football League) are not acronyms.
