Toddlers need schedules to reinforce the sense of security of mealtimes, rest, play and bedtime routines occurring in a familiar order. Toddlers develop self-confidence and experience less anxiety as they learn routines. Tantrums wane as toddlers gain a sense of control over their daily activities.

If the regular routine isn't working and a change is needed, the parent should explain the change to help the toddler expect something different. Parents develop time frames for schedules as general guidelines that allow them to meet the needs of the entire family. Routines establish expectations as the parents help their toddlers perform the familiar steps before meals, activities, bedtime and naps.
